The North American X-15 was an experimental aircraft, powered by a rocket engine. Developed since 1954 by the North American (now Rockwell International), following intense competition with alternative projects defeated, proposed by Bell Aircraft, Douglas Aircraft Company and Republic Aviation, to fulfill a joint research program, sponsored by NACA (now NASA), private institutions related to the airline industry, Air Force and US Navy.
